4th dc 254x300 Washington D.C. – A Great Place to Celebrate Independence DayWashington D.C. is one of the best places to go and feel American. The monuments; the history, and the politics all have an American feel to them and help anyone feel like they’re apart of the country’s narrative. Sure, known D.C. attractions like the White House tour, Ford’s Theater, and the Washington Monument all stick out as the prime locations when visiting our national capital, but those are just some of the great things to see and do when visiting Washington D.C. However, when it comes to Washington it’s as much about when you go as where you go.

For example, if you go during the spring you’ll be right in the middle of the well known Cherry Blossom Festival and going during an election season is bound to come with some great election events going on in and around the city. However, the best time to visit Washington D.C. is arguably the Fourth of July. Not just because it’s one of the most patriotic days of the year, but because there is so much going on in the Capital on the Nation’s birthday.

Here are some great events in Washington D.C. on the Fourth:

  • What would the Fourth of July be without the Declaration of Independence? Just another day most likely, so it’s important to celebrate the greatest American document ever written by going to the National Archives which has a Fourth of July/Declaration of Independence event beginning at 10 a.m. and going to 9 p.m.
  • If you’re a fan of parades there’s plenty of great Fourth of July ones going on around the city that will help you celebrate America in all of its glory. A great one in particular is the Washington D.C. Independence Day Parade, which begins at 11:45 a.m. and goes from Constitutional Avenue and 7th to 17th street.
  • If you’re looking for something that’s quintessentially Fourth of July in D.C., look no further than the world famous A Capitol Fourth Concert which is held on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. This concert goes through many of the great American battle songs via an amazing symphony and ends with one of the biggest and brightest firework displays you’ll see anywhere on the Fourth.

D.C. is the place to feel American and bouncing around from historical monuments and landmarks to the over 150 museums like the amazing  Smithsonian National Museum(s) and National Museum of Crime and Punishment will really make your stay something to remember. It’s no surprise that Washington D.C. and the Fourth of July go great together; if you’re going to celebrate America it’s best to do it in the city that is the most American.

I like this travel-&-lifestyle bit. Even though I’m not anything near American, Independence Day celebrations are something I truly love to join in. Forget about the politics and everything else, and just enjoy the celebration, cherish the rapture of the moment, the reason for being at this point in history, and feel a sense of belonging. Most of all, let the sights and sounds carry you away on Independence Day :)
