Memories for Sale

This is a guest post by Lynn Denholm

“Alright hun.” Claire asks as we start unloading the car. I could only shrug. My best friend Claire and her boyfriend were helping me sell my  stuff at the local car boot sale. It was early Sunday morning and Kieren and I would still be in bed right now, reading the papers and eating breakfast if he hadn’t left me just over a year ago.

It was a really busy place with so many interesting stalls and people.  So many people clearing out to make room for the new.

“Look Janey, I know it was sudden but he’s gone and you’re doing the right thing selling these memories.”

These memories, I thought, were my life, the cds, the books, the funny looking teddy he had given me when we first started dating.

“Excuse me, how much for the guy’s watch?” I looked up to see a girl pointing to the silver watch I had got Kieren as a present on our wedding day.

“Oh I’m sorry, It’s not for sale.” I picked it up remembering how happy we were that day. I love you, Mrs Dunne forever and ever, he had said.

“Do you fancy a cuppa?” Claire had that sympathetic look in her eye.

“Yes please, I’m feeling a little cold.” I mumbled watching the crowds milling about the stalls. Couples walking hand in hand in their own little world. It seemed like yesterday that that was my life. I hated him for leaving me without any warning. I piled up the board games we had accumulated, minimum two players it stated. And I remembered how, when I had had a particularly bad day at work, he would make me pick a game and in no time at all the stresses of the day would melt away and the simple joy of playing operation or scrabble would as usual end with us in helpless fits of laughter.

“One hot cup of tea,” said Claire interrupting my thoughts. “I got chatting to a stallholder selling watches and jewellery. Quite dishy!”

“Who is quite dishy?” demanded Darren. Claire elbowed him and winked.

“That’s nice.” I replied absently, watching an older lady holding my silver photo frame engraved with love forever.

“That’s a lovely frame dear.” She smiled.

As she walked away with her new purchase in her bag I was transported back to last year. We had booked the restaurant for 7pm. He had been working away and we hadn’t seen each other for four weeks. I had got there on time with my anniversary present wrapped.

Then I heard the phone ringing, somehow a taxi was ordered and I was at the hospital and standing at Kieren’s bedside. It had been a head on collision. He was pronounced dead on arrival. I opened the present for him and showed him it. The frame was perfect for the precious scan of our beautiful baby growing inside me. Then I realised my memories would always be in my head and my heart never to be sold.

Just then I noticed a man approaching the stall. “I’m Ben and I met your friend earlier.” He smiled at me. ” I thought I’d come and check out the competition.”  His eyes sparkled mischievously.

“Hi Janey love.” I turned round to see my mum with little Kieren in his pram sleeping peacefully. How beautiful he was, a mini Kieren. Claire was right and it was time to look to the future. “Everything okay?” I could see the concern on her face.

“Yes mum I think it’s beginning to be”.

lynn1 296x300 Memories for SaleLynn says about herself,

I love reading and have just joined a book club but I have always wanted to write. I did a little before a full-time job, kids and a very lively dog took over my life. It’s now a little less hectic so I wrote my first story which is condensed a little for the magazine. I hope you like it.

We never wanna let go of our memories, we hold onto them, but if we hold too long they’ll fade x
Sometimes leaving them even makes them a better memory x (:

    Well done x
