Top 10 Romantic Movies
You sure do not know anyone who has not seen any romantic movie ever. Even if people claim they have not, they did. Be it alone, with their husband or wife, girlfriend or boyfriend, willingly or forced. Everyone has seen them, gossiped about them, loved them or hated them.
Today we are going to pick top 10 romantic movies that have been filmed after 1995. The reason why the time period is so restricted, is that there have been way too many great romance movies before that. Think about Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (that is my all time favorite), Love Story (such a touching story!), Roman Holiday and many many more. You can not pick one and leave another, can you? They are classic. We don’t touch classic. We only enjoy it.
Now back to our top 10 romantic movies (after 1995).
It is a tough choice still, and I am sure many can be added to the list, but let’s start with what we have. And we do not restrict the genres to romantic comedy only. We list the movies that show true feelings and emotions, the ones that make us realize what true love is like.
10. Notting Hill
Starring: Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant
Released: 1999
Sparkling, romantic, warm, humorous. Great soundtrack. Funny dialogues. Pure magic.
Memorable quotes:
After all… I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.
***
The more I think about things, the more I see no rhyme or reason in life. No one knows why some things work out and some things don’t.

9. Sweet Home Alabama
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, Patrick Dempsey
Released: 2002
Love Triangle. Don’t you love that? Sweet, cute, funny. The movie will make you laugh, then cry, then laugh again. It is a perfect blend of romance, comedy and drama.
Memorable quotes:
You’re the first boy I ever kissed, Jake, and I want you to be the last.
***
Jake: You show up here, after seven years, without so much as a “Hey there, Jake, remember me… your wife!” Or a, “Hi honey, lookin’ good. How’s the family?”
Melanie Carmichael: You expect me to tell you look good? What, did they run out of soap at the Piggly Wiggly since I left?
***
Lurlynn: It’s funny how things don’t turn out…
Melanie Carmichael: …It’s funny how they do.
Where to get it: Amazon
8. What Dreams May Come
Starring: Robin Williams, Annabella Sciorra
Released: 1998
One of the most moving movies you’d ever see. A visual masterpiece. The movie that will get you stunned. It is as much sad as it is happy. It evokes a number of emotions and it makes you believe true love happens. It also presents an amazing concept of an afterlife. I’d like to believe things are exactly like this.
Memorable quotes:
I found you in hell. Don’t you think I could find you in Jersey!
***
The Tracker: Your wife love you as strong ? We’ll find her. But when we find her nothing will make her recognize you. Nothing will break her denial. It’s stronger than her love. In fact, reinforced by her love. You can say everything you long to say, including good-bye. Even if she can’t understand it. And you’ll have the satisfaction that you didn’t give up. That has to be enough.
Chris Nielsen: You just get me there, I’ll decide what’s enough.
***
Sometimes, when you win, you lose.
Where to get it: Amazon
7. You’ve Got Mail
Starring: Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks
Released: 1998
Charming Meg Ryan should already be enough. But you got more. A lot more. You’ve got mail is like one of those old-fashioned feel good movies. Funny, smart, heart-touching. You see the story and you live the story. Can’t be better than that.
Memorable quotes:
The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don’t know what the hell they’re doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino.

When you read a book as a child, it becomes a part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does.
***
I always take a relationship to the next level. If that works out, I take it to the next level after that, until I finally reach that level when it becomes absolutely necessary for me to leave.
Where to get it: Amazon
6. Meet Joe Black
Starring: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Claire Forlani
Released: 1998
Meet Joe Black: Sooner or Later Everyone Does. He is expecting you. And he is Death. But it turns out he can fall in love too. An outstanding powerful movie which teaches us not to take life for granted. Ever. Very reflective and philosophic, thought-provoking. Not the usual type of romance comedies. Nothing like that and maybe that is why it is more appealing. The most beautiful love scenes I have ever seen in the movie so far.
Memorable quotes:
Love is passion, obsession, someone you can’t live without. If you don’t start with that, what are you going to end up with? Fall head over heels. I say find someone you can love like crazy and who’ll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen to your heart. I’m not hearing any heart. Run the risk, if you get hurt, you’ll come back. Because, the truth is there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love - well, you haven’t lived a life at all. You have to try. Because if you haven’t tried, you haven’t lived.

5. A Walk to Remember
Starring: Shane West, Mandy Moore
Released: 2002
A very touching movie based on the novel by Nicolas Sparks. It should already say it to you. Right? Totally worth watching. True feelings and emotions. A good choice for “I really need to cry” moment. This movie touches your heart in a way no other movie does and stays in there. Can easily make it to your personal top 5.
Memorable quotes:
Jamie saved my life. She taught me everything. About life, hope and the long journey ahead. I’ll always miss her. But our love is like the wind. I can’t see it, but I can feel it.
Where to get it: Amazon
4. Titanic
Starring: Kate Winslett, Leonardo Di Caprio.
Released: 1997
The list would not be complete without that one, would it? It is really epic. You get one memorable scene after another and you enjoy the music which plays its own role in the movie. It is a beautiful and a tragic story of a true love brought in a woman’s heart through decades. There can’t be said much to it because I don’t know anyone who has not seen the movie.
Where to get it: Amazon
3. Message in a Bottle
Starring: Kevin Kostner, Robin Wright Penn
Released: 1999
A story of love lost and found. Again based on Nicolas Sparks’ novel. A classic love story, a beautiful movie to share with someone you love.
Memorable quotes:
If some lives form a perfect circle, other take shape in ways we cannot predict or always understand. Loss has been part of my journey. But it has also shown me what is precious. So has love for which I can only be grateful.
Where to get it: Amazon
2. The Notebook
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams
Released: 2004
Behind every great love is a great story. It is not a surprise that this movie is also based on the novel by Nicolas Sparks. It is a very heartwarming movie which will make you feel warm inside. A simple but a very sentimental and moving story. The movie that can make you believe in the miraculous power of love If you want to watch something really emotional, that should be your choice.
Memorable quotes:
So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.

The best kind of love is the kind that awakens the soul, makes us reach for more, plants a fire in our hearts, and brings peace to our mind

It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over.

1. Shakespeare in Love
Starring: Joseph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow
Released: 1999
Love is the only inspiration. That was the tagline of the movie. You can’t disagree with that statement. Someone once said about this movie “Shakespeare would be proud”. And he sure would be. Everything is perfect here - story line, execution, cast, costumes, music, bits of humor, clever dialogues. 7 Oscars including for the Best Picture 1998. A delightful watch. Can not be missed at all. Masterpiece.
Memorable quotes:
I will have poetry in my life. And adventure. And love. Love above all. No… not the artful postures of love, not playful and poetical games of love for the amusement of an evening, but love that… over-throws life. Unbiddable, ungovernable - like a riot in the heart, and nothing to be done, come ruin or rapture. Love - like there has never been in a play.

You cannot put 100 good movies into top 10 unfortunately. But I feel that the ones you mentiones lose a little bit against those listed. But then it is only my personal opinion

Enjoyed the list & I realize it’s hard to pick the “best” of anything. I think all of your choices are great romantic movies. I personally would add “The bridges of Madison County”.

You’ve touched on three of my favorites on this list: A Walk to Remember, You’ve Got Mail, and Titanic.
I think what I love best about all three is the emotional connection I felt between the characters, not to mention the well-written stories.
You’ve also made me realize something with this list - these movies focus on the romantic side of love, not relying on tons of sex to get the point across.
As far as everyone seeing at least one romantic movie - I agree with you here; although, I make a past-time out of it.
Great post.
