Everything I Do I Do It For You

11 January 2010 18 Comments

Music is one of the best ways to enjoy the present.  It’s not much fun to look forward to hearing music or to remember what a song sounded like last week, but music right now absorbs you and places you in the present moment.  ~Sonnett Branche

Whatever you can not say music can express really well. It can speak volumes. It can depict emotions, show life, make us smile, cry, wonder, sympathize, believe, dream. It is a part of life we do not want to let go of because maybe in some way or the other it is the only part we can sometimes relate to so much.

I have been thinking for long to start some kind of a music column here on The Colors Magazine. Not something big. Something you can go through within a short amount of time. Something you can relate to or argue with or just smile and be off to your own stuff again.

That is when I decided to go for Monday Music Inspiration (guess I have stolen that name from someone, I believe I even know who this someone is, but I hope permission is granted to use this name for my new column).

What it will be like:

I will present to you the greatest songs of the last years (my taste which might be pretty messed up but you will get used to it) with some background information about the song and the artist, the video and the lyrics. I hope you will enjoy if not the posts themselves but at least the music.

Today I will start as you can guess from the post’s title with “Everything I Do I Do It For You”. I believe there is hardly anyone who does not know the song or have never heard it.  The song co-written and performed by Bryan Adams was featured on his 1991 album Waking up the Neighbours and on the soundtrack for Kevin Kostner movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991).  The song was played over the credits in the movie. The recording company was actually reluctant whether to include the song to the official film’s soundtrack or not. But the song was a huge success and having it as a part of official soundtrack only added more to that success.

Initially the film company was not happy with the song and tried to make Adams change it, but good for all of us he refused to change anything and the song came out as we know it now.

In 1991 the song has become best-selling and is till now one of the best-selling singles of all time.  The single sold over 3 million copies. It topped many of the charts all over the world for many weeks. This went to #1 in 30 countries. It also won a Grammy for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television in 1992. More on this you can as always read on Wikipedia.

The official video of the song you can see here. Director: Julian Temple. Shot on the coast of England (looking at Wales) Intercut with footage of the film “Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves”.

Song’s Lyrics:

Look into my eyes - you will see

What you mean to me

Search your heart - search your soul

And when you find me there you’ll search no more

Don’t tell me it’s not worth tryin’ for

You can’t tell me it’s not worth dyin’ for

You know it’s true

Everything I do - I do it for you

Look into your heart - you will find

There’s nothin’ there to hide

Take me as I am - take my life

I would give it all - I would sacrifice

Don’t tell me it’s not worth fightin’ for

I can’t help it - there’s nothin’ I want more

Ya know it’s true

Everything I do - I do it for you

There’s no love - like your love

And no other - could give more love

There’s nowhere - unless you’re there

All the time - all the way

Oh - you can’t tell me it’s not worth tryin’ for

I can’t help it - there’s nothin’ I want more

I would fight for you - I’d lie for you

Walk the wire for you - ya I’d die for you

Ya know it’s true

Everything I do - I do it for you

I remember when that song came out! It’s certainly very strong stuff. What happened to Bryan Adams anyway? Is he still performing?

I was a kid back then and I am not even sure if it came out in Russia at all… anyways I could not speak English either :D
And answering your question, yes he is still performing :)

A music column is a great thing. I always say that we all have a soundtrack that we live by depending on the day or the mood. My soundtrack is a little strange at times, but I could not write or be creative without it.

As for this song, wow, I remember this like it was yesterday. It was viral before viral existed. While I am not the biggest Brian Adams fan, I have to admit I still sing along to this song when it comes on the radio (which for me is saying something).

I so agree with you about soundtrack of our life. Too often what we do and what decisions we make are influenced by our mood which was created by the songs we listen to.

My wife and I love music! It’s a very important part of our lives. We have over twenty songs that we consider “our song” and we react when any of them come on. One very special song for us the the theme from “Twin Peaks”.
Sometimes we send each other love letters by sending a song online, especially via youtube.

    Great site, and interesting thread.

I enjoy listening to music especially at night with the lights dimmed. It’s very relaxing and clears my mind.

Two of my favourite artists would be Kevin Kern and Yiruma. The melody of their piano pieces touches and soothes my heart. Anyone else listens to their music?

Music has same effect on me. I even write stories while listening to it :)

I would check out the artists you mentioned, will let you know what I think :)
