The Test: 55 Fiction
Contest entry #9: The Test
“… this is an insult! Say no to that impertinent girl”!
“Absolutely. What does she think of herself! HIV test before marriage?? How embarrassing”!
“.. But ma, there’s nothing wrong with it. I’ve already taken it. And would get the report any minute now”..
(Door bell)
They wait, as Prateek reads the report.
“So”?
“Positive….”!

Of the ones I’ve read so far.. this was easily the best. It had drama, conflict and a wonderful climax at the end. excellent work.

Ouch. But honestly I saw it coming.
But I like your intent of portraying that women too should exercise the right to chose and come out of the orthodox norms that help no one.

Matangi, this is a nice story! Of course women can ask for a HIV test before saying acceptance to a marriage. It’s their life as much as the suitor’s! Your fifty five fiction said a lot in less! Wonderful written and and the best of luck!

I loved it.Woman empowerment, gender equality and a host of other issues are addressed in this piece. And it was an absolute treat for a read as well.

That’s a mini play in the contest. The one with morals. It’s difficult to choose a best line in this one. It is a combined effect story - Each sentence is essential.

Awesome!! The way you have shown the hypocricy of indian society.. as well as the way we seem lax about protection is awesome!!

Among the one’s I’ve read, this fiction had a difference. I liked it coz, it didn’t bore me till the end. and the last line..ooouch !! it hurts…poor guy, he was so positive about the test, I mean he was OK with the girl’s request of testing, in an anticipation that it will turn out to be -ve,…
Anyways, I liked the ending too ! Well written

Interesting topic to write on, loved that you raised some social issues here as well, the hypocrisy of society and the equal rights of both genders, that’s something we should talk about.
