One Bottle, Two Bottle, Three Bottle

12 August 2009 48 Comments

vodka One Bottle, Two Bottle, Three Bottle“One bottle, two bottle, three bottle,” Andy counted examining unfamiliar labels.

“Bottles.” Miley corrected.

“What?”

“Three bottles. Plural,” she explained without looking at him. She just had taken up plurals at school.

Andy nodded. He was not going to school yet.

“One bottle, two bottle, three bottle,” he repeated.

Miley didn’t say a word. She was painting. It was one of those paintings where fancy geometric shapes transformed into human figures.

“What are they?” Andy asked pointing at the bottles.

Silence.

“He beats my mom,” Miley said unexpectedly.

Andy looked at her confused.

“He drinks from the bottles and then beats my mom,” she explained, her eyes still on the painting.

“Who?” He didn’t understand.

“Klaus.” She refused to call her mom’s new husband dad.

Silence again.

Miley kept on painting. Andy looked at the bottles.

“I have to stop him,” Miley finally broke silence, done with her painting.

“How?” Andy asked.

“If he doesn’t have anything to drink, he won’t beat her,” the girl sounded confidently.

Andy didn’t have time to reply. His mom came to take him home.

“Thanks, Miley, for looking after him,” she said and they left.

Miley smiled.

When Miley’s mother came home in the evening, the girl was still in the kitchen. She lay on the floor, three empty vodka bottles beside her.

And a painting.

Geometric shapes, two figures.

A mother and a daughter.

One bottle, two bottle, three bottle.

    lena, lovely story!

its beautiful how much the daughter loves her mom, to drink 3 vodka bottles to protect her from being beaten up… a special bond between the two…

a bit of innocence involved too, with the little boy and the plurals…

    good one! :)

Like I told you, I guess ‘lovely’ would be a wrong word here. The bond they share or rather what a girl feels for her mom is really a beautiful emotion. Yet it led to tragedy.

    Hi Lena;

It’s an absolute truth of many closed doors and you have in a very unique way expressed the emotions and pain.

When I was reading this story…i was in my own pace trying to figure out different ending of the story. And when at the end I read..
…”She lay on the floor, three empty vodka bottles beside her…” I thought the little girl had in her mind decided to hit with those empty bottles on the Klaus head…A sheer tragic end………..anyway…its just an imagination…

    The Colors Magazine

    Hi, Rachana :)
you are right, saying that it is the truth of closed doors and many are just not aware of this, or trying to ignore it.
I wish Klaus would suffer instead of the little girl, yet life always gives us different plots.

Good blog and very touching. We adults sometimes forget we have small innocent kids in our lives and how our actions will affect them.

    The Colors Magazine

you are right, as adults we often forget that we are responsible for someone else except ourselves. Too often it leads to tragedies. I hope my message reached the ones who forgot.

That’s a very touching story, Lena. Very beautiful bond between the two. But the end is tragic. It happens. Not everything is rosy around us.

I came to your blog after a long time. Looks very different here. :-)

you are right, such things happen but we either dont notice them or pretend they dont exist or dont actually care till it happens to be of our concern.
