3 Facts: Nizhny Novgorod

11 August 2009 16 Comments

It is Tuesday and as promised The Colors Magazine is back with One City - 3 facts column. Today I want to present to you a city which most of you have never heard about. It is my hometown, Nizhny Novgorod (Russia). It is claimed to be Russia’s third/fourth largest city. Maybe it is not so anymore but the citizens of Nizhny Novgorod tend to ignore the fact of existence of some other large Russia’s cities and proudly call their home town the third capital of Russia (after Moscow and Saint Petersburg). Yet again, it  might not be the third capital, but at least it is the capital of one of 7 Federal Districts of Russian Federation.

I will not tell you now that the city was founded in 1221 and that there are more than 600 unique historical, architectural and cultural monuments. As well as I will not tell you about all the lakes and big and small rivers in and around the city. I will not tell you anything.

I will only ask you to watch this video, created by José Antonio Lozano Rodriguez.

Now, when you are done with the video, I can finally do what I was supposed to do in the beginning.

3 Facts about Nizhny Novgorod

1.       Nizhny Novgorod has a monument to a 5-kopeek coin. Traditionally Russian currency is Ruble which consists of 100 Kopeek. The monument is 1.2 m in diameter and built into the pavement. As a sample the designers took the coin of 1916. It is believed that whoever touches the coin will be blessed with prosperity.

2.       The city was closed to foreigners throughout the Soviet times due to its military significance. The famous MIG fighter jets are made here as well as submarines (not a secret anymore).

3.       Archangel Michael Cathedral within the walls of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin (built in 1221), is the only one of 5 Cathedrals within the Kremlin which survived through centuries.

And as a bonus I leave you with a picture of my office building at night.

Next week in One City - 3 Facts: Amsterdam. Don’t forget to check back here.

As always your comments, feedback and opinions are appreciated. You might as well leave the names of cities which you want to be featured in The Colors Magazine.

The video clip and musical score was superb! I have always wanted to visit Russia. I have an interest in Stalin’s and Lenin’s tombs, and also Gorky Maxim as well.
The history of Russia is so old. I would love to learn more about its history. And I also am aware of the Mig fighters which were used during the Korean War against the Americans. This was a fantastic post! I can’t wait to read more of your stuff.

I am glad you liked my post. You should once visit Russia, am sure you will get a lot of positive emotions. The country is really rich on history and events.
You might have read that Maxim Gorky was born in Nizhny Novgorod and in the last century the city had his name and was known as Gorky. Weird enough I was born in Gorky and live in Nizhny Novgorod while they are the same.
The city still has a lot of places dedicated to that famous writer, including the house where he lived as a child.
Welcome here on The Colors Magazine, and I hope you will like the future posts as well.

How fortunate of you to come from such a wonderful and historical city. To be honest, I haven’t heard of it till now…which adds to its appeal. :) I’m into historical architecture and I see your city has a lot of it. Hope I can visit your hometown someday. But first I have to know where it is. :)

Lovely shot of your office building, btw.
