Maybe This Time

man comforting woman 300x300 Maybe This Time“My hair is a mess.”

“It’s beautiful.”

“No, seriously, just look at me. The Beast would look a Beauty compared to me.” She laughed.

He looked at her as she asked and could not really figure what her problem was. She was perfect. Her composed face reflected a quiet essence of maturity and confidence. Her blue eyes sparkled with joy and could penetrate deep into his soul and read each of his private thoughts and dreams, except for the ones which he was too afraid to admit even to himself.

Her hair… Well, it really was a mess but he would never tell her that. In fact her sunshiny locks flowed over her shoulders and gave her such an easy going look that he couldn’t help but admire her natural beauty. A fetching smile played on her lips and he would pay a million dollars just to know what she was thinking right now.

“What are you thinking about?” He asked.

She reached for her cell phone without replying to him. She often did it. Not replying to him. He didn’t care. Well, he did, but he couldn’t help it. He was too afraid to lose her over some stupid matter now when he finally took a permanent place in her life. The place of her best friend. It was not the place he had always hoped for, but something was better than nothing, he thought and kept on bearing all her mood swings and heartaches without complaints.

He took years of selfless dedication, months of sleepless nights spent over long phone conversations about her love life, weeks of hearing her pain out and now days of seeing her happy in love. Again. Not with him. Again. He wouldn’t risk his place in her life for anything. It was the only chance to stay close enough. Sometimes he wanted to hide and see if she would go and search for him. Sometimes he wanted to walk away and wondered if she would follow him. But he was so scared that she would not even notice his disappearance. And this fear made him stick to her and the little of what he had with her. Like some of her smiles most of which were gifted to someone else. Like hidden looks he was throwing at her when he thought she was not watching. Or those childish fights over the phone they had every now and then just for fun.

And holding her hands when she was too upset to even notice.

It was way too much to lose as he couldn’t imagine living any other way, without seeing her every day, without hearing her voice, without loving her.

She didn’t know. Or maybe she just pretended she didn’t know. As at times he wondered how could she NOT know? Why do girls run from the ones that make them happy, and fight for the ones that make them cry? She always ended up with the ones who hurt her. Couldn’t she see he was the one? He would have given her the world if she just asked once. She never did. And maybe she never would.

He listened to her phone call with one ear only, deeply sank into the world of his own dreams. It was only when she began crying he realized that something was wrong.

“What happened, sweetie?” He asked.

“Nothing.” She tried to hold back her emotions, to hide her feelings but the tears in her eyes were a dead give-away.

“Nothing.” She repeated and then burst into sobs. She was talking and talking and he couldn’t get a word from her confused explanations. It took him at least ten minutes before he could understand that the guy of her dreams broke up with her over the phone. And he felt again how her heart was breaking into a million of pieces like the last time and the time before that and before that too. All he wanted to do was to collect these little pieces and bring them together for her. But she wouldn’t let him do this. She had never let him before. Maybe this time she would, he thought rocking her in his arms till she fell asleep. Maybe this time…

Wow..what a beautiful piece of writing on love.

I felt a touch of sidney sheldon in your writing :) I am sure i could write like you in another one year for sure :P

Apart from story i have a question for you:
Why does it happens that one has to become a struggling soul to be with someone? why cant we be ourself and find our love simply just like a routine life.

I am not talking about relationships, though thats a far thing to happen in such cases( as in story you mentined).

Everyone wants to be love and be loved in return. Dont you think we miss that thing of “to be loved” in whole process of being with the person you love?
I have hundred questions but getting on personal terms is not what i wish to do.

Your post reminded me of something that had happened in near past.

    Keep writing :)

    Cheers

    The Colors Magazine

a touch of sidney sheldon? thats way too good a compliment!! :)
    Now about your question:
i dont think you struggle to be with someone, you just are with this person, as a friend or a partner or something else, unless they let you be with them. You dont choose who to love, this feeling cant be explained nor predicted or controlled. Hence you are left with no choice but to be as close to this someone as it is possible. Because if you found someone you love, whats the point of living a routine life? Because whom can you meet if you already had met that one person?

And you know, yes everyone wants to be loved, and it is tough not to get the love you are ready to give that other person. But its not like you put conditions in love, if you are loved, you are the luckiest person in the world, but if you are not, arent you lucky enough to have met that one and be able to give them the best of care you have. Doesnt it make you happy to see them happy? Because if it doesnt you should think if you really love them.
It is all tough and painful, but thats how life is, it is not always like we have planned or dreamt, but we can get the best out of it.. at least we can try :)

    [Reply]

    Mahesh

Hmmm i agree with you :)

I think thats how life is…

Lena, Lena you always amaze me, this one was good one, and you know it is our human nature to hit the brick before we go around the brick. I don’t know if analogy fits into the story, but it really sounds familiar, we tend to go after those who care less, and skip those who care a lot. Anna :)

    [Reply]

    The Colors Magazine

i guess your analogy really fits here, but sometimes after hitting the brick for long you might not need to go around as you will get a direct way open.

    Hi Lena;

Almost everytime I get amazed to read your published stories which are so beautiful sensitive. Recently one of my very close friend of mine(a girl, broke her relationship. When I was reading ur story, it remined me of HER. She cried and cried on phone and beleive me for almost 15 minutes I could not understant why and for what she was crying. Later I found it was a guy for whom she was crying for…and simply then I questioned her back…

..”If the guy makes your today so much…just for a moment imagine…how much he could have made you cry later in your life..”

So good it got over soon before you would have experienced the spillover in your Life!

Its hard to overcome such drastic emotions in life…but its better to be bold enough to take them as learing phases and as greater challenges in life to overcome.

    The Colors Magazine

you are right, it is really tough to deal with such situations in life. But they always come as a lesson and we gain experience… though it doesnt really help to know that things will be fine in the end.. first we do get our portion of suffering

Don’t know much about colors but you sure do put voice to my soul. I’ve lived most of the part of this piece. That feeling of doing anything just to be close, just to see that smile.

Only in my case, after 7 years now that there were many more of her friends around, I did disappear and she didn’t notice. And I knew it was time to walk away. It was hard as hell but the right thing to do. One of your older posts helped a lot too. One where you mentioned ‘love gives us a fairy tale…only when both of them put up a fight for it’.

I feel for the protagonist here…and if after so many years of his presence she still doesn’t feel anything for him, I guess, its time for him to walk away too.

Don’t you ever stop writing! You are the voice of all romantic souls like me. :)

    [Reply]

    The Colors Magazine

I am taking colors of my soul to make my readers’ souls speak, how’s that?
In some situations it is really better to walk out and to move on, even though it will be damn hard. Love is a fairy tale, but it always requires 2 people to fight for relationship, else it won’t make any sense. Will only hurt.
Maybe my character is not ready to walk away yet… it takes strength and often in love we are weak :)

Am not planning to stop writing. Not till I have tortured too many romantic souls with my pieces :D
