3 Facts: Amsterdam
Today as promised The Colors Magazine continues One City - 3 Facts column by taking a closer look at Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. The city which is mostly well known due to Red Light District as well as to its liberal policies toward soft drugs. Thank God, the city has much more to offer than just that.
Why Amsterdam? Maybe because this city is the only one which impressed me more than I had expected.
I mean you know what to expect from London or Paris or Rome, but you can’t be prepared to the feeling of freedom and beauty and even majesty of Amsterdam. You either fall in love with the city immediately or… a bit later. After getting to know it. After wandering among the mesmerizing network of canals (165 canals, 90 islands connected by 1,281 bridges) and feeling the actual magic of this city.
To know more about Amsterdam in dates and figures, you can just do a google search. But on The Colors Magazine I want to tell you 3 Facts which might not be that well known.
3 Facts about Amsterdam
1. Shiphol Airport, Amsterdam
When you land there you are actually 4 meters below sea level. But that’s not the only fun fact about the airport.
First, you can actually get married there. You have choices of how you want the ceremony to be: like saying those sacred words in a hangar or atop the Skyport building for a view of landing aircraft. You might also have a reception on board of 1930s Dakota airplane. For more information you can always check Schiphol Weddings site.
If you don’t plan to get married yet, you can go to museum there. Yes, you heard it right, you can actually go to Museum without leaving the airport’s terminal. The Rijksmuseum is the first museum in the world to have an annexe in an airport and Schiphol is the first airport to have a museum in its terminal. The museum was officially opened on 9 December 2002.
2. More than 1 million visitors are being welcomed at Anne Frank house yearly
If you read the famous Diary of a young girl you might want to visit this place too. This is the actual house where Anne Frank, her family, and four other people spent two years in hiding before being betrayed and turned in to the Nazis. This summer UNESCO announced that the manuscripts of Anne Frank have been included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, the World Heritage List for documents. This diary is one of the most touching and heartrending stories you might come across, you will find yourself crying after finishing it and you will always keep wondering how a young girl could be so thoughtful, contemplating, philosophical and show that much hope and love and courage even when it seemed there was no place for any of this.
“Despite everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart,” she said, and if she believed I am sure we can believe too.
3. Amsterdam has a house boat known as the Poezenboot (”the Cat Boat”) which acts as a house for stray cats. A woman who had been re-housing stray cats had the idea of getting them a houseboat. Now gone, the idea lives on as volunteers keep looking after a boat full of cats.
That’s it… 3 facts about Amsterdam. If you liked it, if you visited there, if you have something to add, you are more than welcome. That’s what comments section is for.
Next week in One City - 3 Facts…. well, let’s keep it a secret for now

I love love love Amsterdam! I was there over 15 years ago and I’m really over do.
I visited ann Frank’s house, and I actually thought a lot more than 1 million people come to see it each year.
I am also pretty sure more than one million visit the coffee shops:)

The Colors Magazine
When I was in Amsterdam I somehow forgot about Anne Frank’s house… will visit it next time I guess..
And the statistics of 1 million i took from their official site.. they said they reached this mark in 2008 only.
As for coffee shops, that i am really sure of
